“Too many seniors are being targeted by increasingly sophisticated scams,” said Rep. Amy Elik. “This seminar is about empowering older adults with the tools and knowledge they need to protect themselves. I’m happy to partner with Senator Harriss and the Attorney General’s Office to bring these resources directly to our community”

This seminar will help seniors understand how to recognize potential fraud attempts, learn how to be ready and stop them, and how to use the Attorney General’s Senior Help Line.

“By connecting our seniors with the experts who can answer their questions and equip them with tools they need to stay a step ahead of the scammers,” said Sen. Erica Harriss. “We encourage all seniors and folks interested to attend.”

“The Mill area in Granite City has undergone extensive revitalization recently,” said Senator Harriss. “Hosting this event in this area seemed like a natural fit to encourage families from around the 56th District to come visit not only for the great activities at the kids fair, but also to encourage people to visit the area and local businesses. Seeing the kids have fun and see some of these emergency trucks up close and interact with our first responders is one of the reasons we held this event.”

This year’s Kids Fair featured nearly a dozen vendors, face painting, a balloon artist, karaoke, and several safety and construction vehicles that allowed children the chance to “touch-a-truck” and see them up close.

The vendors that participated in this year’s Kids Fair included the City of Granite City, Kraft Heinz, Meridian Managed Care Plans of Illinois, Bright Point, Granite City Park District, Illinois Department of Human Services, Madison County Family Community Resource Center, Riverbend Head Start & Family Services, Six Mile Regional Library District, St. Clair County Coordinator Intake, and State Representative Amy Elik.

“I am excited to bring a free Kid’s Fair event to the Granite City community to provide resources and fun activities for children across the district,” said Senator Harriss.

The event will feature a balloon artist, face painting, karaoke, as well as touch-a-truck for kids to experience and see. Light snacks and refreshments will also be provided by Kraft Heinze. 

“I want to thank our community partners for coming together so we can provide this fun event for our kids and their families,” said Senator Harriss. “While it looks like it will be a warm day, the sun will be shining and we will have plenty of water, so just pack your sunscreen and let’s have a great day!”

The event will take place at The Mill (Former Niedringhaus United Methodist Church), located at 1311 20^th Street in Granite City from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM.

Vendors for this year’s Kids Fair include: City of Granite City, Bright Point, Granite City Park District, Illinois Department of Human Services, Madison Country Family Community Resource Center, Riverbend Head Start & Family Services, Six Mile Regional Library District, St. Clair County Coordinator Intake, Meridian Health, and State Representative Amy Elik.

“We are thankful for the people who took the time to submit artwork for this year’s contest,” said Senator Harriss. “We have some very talented artists in the 56^th District, and I am thrilled to showcase this incredible piece by Janet in my office.”

 The 2024 Hometown Spotlight Art Contest sought out artists across the community to create artwork highlighting iconic landscapes and landmarks across the 56^th District.

“The Glen Carbon Covered Bridge serves as a village focal point,” said artist Janet Pursell. “I wanted to recreate something that has historic value to the community that best represents the bridge’s purpose. I am thrilled to be this year’s winner!”

The Glen Carbon Covered Bridge serves as a historic community piece, remembering the lives of coal miners and early settlers. It is also home to several events throughout the community each year.

State Senator Jason Plummer (R-Edwardsville) and State Senator Erica Harriss (R-Glen Carbon) will host an End of Session Town Hall event at the Edwardsville Gun Club on Tuesday, May 30. “Since being elected, I have always been committed to keeping my friends and neighbors up to date on what is happening in Springfield.  As their voice and ears at the capitol, a duty I take seriously, it is also my job to make sure I am constantly seeking their input and feedback to make sure they are well represented,” said State Senator Plummer. “I look forward, as always, to more townhalls and events aimed and insuring, at least in our neck of the woods, government is working for the people, not the other way around.” Both Senators will provide an update on legislation that was passed during the 2023 Spring Session and hear from members of the audience. “Constituent services is incredibly important to me and this is a great way to hear about legislative matters that were brought forth in the Senate,” said Senator Harriss. “It’s also a great way for your voices to be heard on issues that matter the most to you so we can advocate on behalf of you during the next session.” The town hall will be Tuesday, May 30, from 6:30PM until 8PM at the Edwardsville Gun Club located at 4104 Staunton Road, Edwardsville, IL 62025.
