Constitution Day one step closer to becoming recognized in all Illinois schools

Senator Harriss’ bill heads to full Senate for consideration

State Senator Erica Harriss (56th-Glen Carbon) is hopeful all Illinois schools will observe Constitution Day in the near future as her legislation, House Bill 1273, which would require schools to recognize September 17 as a commemorative holiday, passed the Senate Education Committee this week.

“Constitution Day is an important holiday as we celebrate the signing of the United States Constitution. This legislation seeks to not only honor its formation but also provides students with an educational opportunity to learn more about government,” said Sen. Harriss.

Currently, Constitution Day is recognized federally but not by the State of Illinois. This would ensure all Illinois schools are celebrating and honoring this commemorative holiday.

“This legislation doesn’t give students a day off, but rather requires school districts to teach students the highest form of law in our country. It’s extremely important students have a better understanding on the three different branches of government and know their basic rights and guarantees,” concluded Harriss.

The legislation signals Sen. Harriss’ first bill to move out of committee since taking office in January. Filed by Representative Amy Elik (111th-Alton) and carried by Sen. Harriss in the Senate, the bill now heads to the full Senate for consideration before the Governor can sign it into law.
