State Senator Erica Harriss (56th-Glen Carbon) has released the below statement following the officer-involved shooting Friday afternoon in Granite City:
“The attack on a Granite City police officer Friday afternoon is a stark reminder of the danger our officers face every single day. I am grateful the officer is currently stable after surgery, and my thoughts are with him, his family, and the entire department as they work through this traumatic event.
“This never should have happened. A violent repeat offender who should have been behind bars was back on the street, and our officer nearly paid with his life. When violent criminals are given more protection than victims, our communities suffer. Enough is enough.
“I commend the swift work of all the responding departments in capturing the suspect. Their dedication prevented further harm, and they deserve our full support. Now, our justice system must move quickly. Violence against law enforcement is an attack on public safety, and it must carry serious consequences.
“I stand with our officers. I stand for law and order. And I will continue to demand accountability to keep dangerous offenders off our streets.”
